DESCRIPTION: Wing length 9 - 12.5mm. A fairly common species that can be identified with a little practice. The markings on the black tergites of 3 and 4 are similar to arms with a clenched fist and pale yellow to cream in colour. The eyes of this species are not bare. BEHAVIOUR: Males rest on high foliage and vibrate their wings at a high frequency. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout except Scotland. HABITAT: Seen in gardens, parks, wasteground and a variety of other habitats. PERIOD: Several broods from May to November with peaks in August. |
